Magnetic materials refer to materials that can respond to magnetic fields in some way. According to the characteristics of the material in the external magnetic field, it can be divided into five categories: paramagnetic material, diamagnetic material, ferromagnetic material, ferrimagnetic material, and antiferromagnetic material. Paramagnetic and diamagnetic materials are called weak magnetic materials; ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic materials are called strong magnetic materials. Magnetic materials usually refer to strong magnetic materials.
According to magnetic properties, magnetic materials can be divided into soft magnetic materials, permanent magnetic materials, and functional magnetic materials, as follows:
Soft magnetic materials: can achieve the maximum magnetization intensity with the smallest external magnetic field, including metal soft magnetic, soft magnetic ferrite, amorphous nanocrystalline alloy.
Permanent magnetic materials: Also known as hard magnetic materials, they refer to materials that are difficult to magnetize and difficult to demagnetize once magnetized, including rare earth permanent magnetic materials, metal permanent magnetic materials and permanent magnetic ferrites.
Functional magnetic materials: mainly magnetostrictive materials, magnetic recording materials, magnetoresistance materials, magnetic bubble materials, magneto-optical materials and magnetic film materials, etc.
In the field of magnetic materials, soft magnetic materials, permanent magnetic materials and functional magnetic materials have demonstrated their unique functions and application values according to their inherent physical properties and application scenarios. Their functional differences have established the irreplaceable position of various materials in specific technical applications:
(1) Soft magnetic materials are easy to magnetize and demagnetize, and are mainly suitable for scenarios that require frequent magnetization and demagnetization. Their easy magnetization and demagnetization properties play a key role in electromagnetic induction and energy transmission. Application products mainly include power transformers, inductors, power supply systems, etc.
(2) Permanent magnetic materials have strong magnetism and can generate a lasting magnetic field. They are mainly used in permanent magnets, motors, generators, magnetic sensors and other products that require strong magnetism;
(3) Functional magnetic materials are mainly used to achieve specific functions.
As an important industrial basic material, magnetic materials are widely used in new energy vehicles and charging piles, smart homes and smart appliances, communication power supplies and communication equipment, green lighting, photovoltaic energy storage, Internet of Things, medical and other fields. According to Precedence Research data, the global magnetic materials market size has reached US$31.65 billion in 2024, and it is expected to reach US$59.59 billion in 2034, with an average annual compound growth rate of 6.53% from 2022 to 2030.
